Staircase with a turned newel post and white balusters

Carpentry

The work

Stairs are the most used part of a house and the most visible joint between floors. We repair loose treads, squeaks and wobbly railings, and refresh handrails and balusters so the staircase looks and feels solid.

What the work covers

  • Loose or squeaky treads
  • Balusters and newel posts
  • Handrail repair and replacement
  • Stair trim and skirt boards
  • Painting or staining the staircase
Hands marking a board with a pencil, tape measure and level
White built-in shelving, wainscoting and window trim

Process

  1. 1

    Inspect

We test treads, risers, posts and rails to find what is loose and why.

  2. 2

    Secure

Fasteners and blocking are added so the structure stops moving.

  3. 3

    Replace or repair

Damaged pieces are replaced or rebuilt to match the rest of the stair.

  4. 4

    Finish

Sand, fill and paint or stain for a uniform finish.

Estimate

We do not quote from a photo or a price list. We look at the work, then write up the estimate. These are the things that move it.

  • Number of steps
  • Open or closed staircase
  • Amount of replacement versus repair
  • Species and finish
  • Safety-code requirements for height and spacing

FAQ

Can squeaky stairs be fixed?

Usually yes. Squeaks come from movement between treads and risers, and securing them removes most of it.

Can you match old balusters?

Sometimes. We compare the profile and tell you whether a close match exists or whether replacing the whole set looks better.

Do you do the painting as well?

Yes. Staircases can be painted or stained as part of the same job.

How do I get an estimate for stairs or railings?
